What is Suboxone Detoxificaton?

In October of 2002 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Suboxone to treat opioid addiction. The Athens Area Commencement Center takes pride in claiming bragging rights of being the very first provider to use Suboxone in with addiction treatment in the Athens area for opiate detoxification. Since 2002, the Athens Area Commencement Center has finessed and mastered Suboxone administration with opiate addicted individuals. Suboxone is a medication treatment for opiate dependence. It helps people detox from opiates by reducing withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings.

AACC’s Suboxone Model

Although many practitioners may treat opioid addiction with Suboxone as a MAT (medication assisted treatment) or long-term maitainence model, AACC’s remains true to its abstinence base treatment philosophy. We do not support long term opiate replacement therapies with Suboxone or Methadone. AACC only uses Suboxone for detox and stabilization. The Athens Area Commencement Center Suboxone Detoxification is only one piece of our full treatment modalities such as psychoeducation, structured group and individual therapy.

How it Works

Suboxone is a buprenorphine/naloxone medication used for the treatment of opioid dependence. Suboxone can be used to provide effective craving relief and withdrawal reduction in opiate dependence individuals through detoxification and maintenance therapies. Suboxone is a scheduled III controlled medication that can only be prescribed. Suboxone administration must be skillfully timed to begin and end the dosage under medical supervision. It should be administered by a trained healthcare professional or it can be self- administered with the supervision of trained medical professionals. Opiate dependent individuals can only start a Suboxone regiment once the individual is in active physical withdrawal. This means that beginning a Suboxone administration too soon can induce even more severe withdrawal symptoms. It is very important to understand when the right time to start the medication should be. If Suboxone is administered properly, its affects work beautifully. This is why it is very important to have trained medical professionals to assist with and determine the appropriate time to begin and discharge a Suboxone regiment.

The Difference

The Athens Area Commencement Center treats opiate addiction with indivualized care. Individuals seek treatment from AACC at different stages in their opiate addiction. Suboxone treatment protocols are determined by skillfully and in-depth assessments with our addiction medical professionals.   The assessments are then used to determine the appropriate dosing strength and schedule per each individual need. Assessments are continued daily to ensure individuals are adapting to protocols successful. Manipulation of protocols is sometimes needed for adjustments based on daily withdrawal assessments. Suboxone therapies cannot all be used exactly the same for every opiate addicted individual. Many healthcare providers lack the experience and knowledge to adapt Suboxone protocols per individual needs. Many practitioners over prescribe or under prescribe with improper administration protocols and lack the knowledge to manipulate when necessary.

Cleaning Up the Mess

Suboxone can also be misused, prescribed improperly and abused. AACC has seen a recent increase with long term Suboxone users seeking medical detox and assistance to discontinue the physical dependence of the drug. Due to a recent increase of MAT and long term Suboxone methods; AACC are treating more individuals that seek assistance to get off Suboxone. AACC has developed and implemented specific protocols to detox individuals addicted to Suboxone due to the long term use.
